Sand Play for Toddler Games
Whether you’re at the beach, on a playground, or in a backyard sandbox, making designs in the sand is absorbing, creative, and entertaining. It also provides a great way to combine artistic endeavors with healthy outdoor play.
- Gather a variety of tot-size tools, including sand toys (plastic buckets, shovels, and molds), kitchen utensils (spatulas, wooden spoons, and plastic containers), and garden tools (watering cans and miniature rakes).
- Pour water over the sand to make a more pliable palette.
- Show your child how to use the tools to make designs. He can draw a rake through the sand, for instance, to create straight or wavy rows of lines. Or he can press a pie pan into the sand to make a big circle. Use empty yogurt containers and wet sand to add towers and turrets.
- Show your toddler how he can erase his creations by dumping water on top or by simply running his hands over the sand. Then encourage him to build again
